Most people don’t expect to find a monthly line dancing community tucked into the North Shore countryside of Oʻahu. But at Gunstock Ranch, line dancing has become a lot more than just an event.
For many people, it’s something they look forward to every month.
People drive from all over the island to come dance at the ranch every second Saturday of the month. Some come with a big group of friends, some bring their families, and others show up alone and end up dancing with people they’ve never met before. Over time, familiar faces start returning month after month, and what started as “trying something new” turns into a real community.
One of the reasons people keep coming back is that it’s beginner-friendly without feeling intimidating. Every night starts with instruction from 7-8pm, so even if you’ve never line danced before, you can still jump in. There’s no pressure to know the moves beforehand.
And once people start learning, they usually want to keep learning more.
Over the months, dancers start recognizing songs, improving their timing, and building confidence on the floor. Some of the crowd favorites include:
- Any Man of Mine (Gunstock version)
- Miles On It
- Fishing in the Dark
- Cotton Eye Joe
- Cha Cha to Neon Moon
- Footloose
- Shivers
- Wagon wheel
- Church clap
- Copperhead road
- Good time
- Dj tonight
- Country girl
The mix changes throughout the night, which keeps things fun and brings together different age groups and experience levels.
Unlike a typical nightlife experience on Oʻahu, line dancing at the ranch feels more relaxed and community-focused. There’s space to talk, laugh, sit by the firepit, and spend time together in between dances. Families bring keiki, couples come for date nights, and groups of friends make it part of their monthly routine.
