Trying something new can come with uncertainty — but horseback riding is far more approachable than many people expect. Knowing a few basics ahead of time can help you feel confident from the moment you arrive.
Listen to Your Wranglers
Your guides are there to support you every step of the way. They’ll explain how to mount, hold the reins, and communicate with your horse before the ride begins. No prior experience is necessary — just a willingness to learn.
Stay Relaxed
Horses are incredibly intuitive animals. When riders relax, horses tend to relax too. You don’t need to be perfect — simply stay attentive and follow your guide’s instructions.
Give Horses Personal Space
Just like people, horses appreciate respectful boundaries. Always approach from the front where they can see you, and avoid sudden movements.
Wear the Right Shoes
Choose closed-toe shoes that fit securely in a stirrup. Boots are great, but sturdy sneakers work well too. Very wide or oversized soles may not sit comfortably in the stirrup, so a streamlined shoe is best.
Ask Questions
Wranglers love helping first-time riders feel comfortable. Asking questions is encouraged and often makes the experience even more enjoyable.
It’s Easier Than You Think
Many guests arrive feeling nervous and leave wondering why they didn’t try it sooner. Horseback riding offers a rare mix of adventure and calm — and there’s no better place to try it than against the backdrop of Oahu’s North Shore.
