It sounds like something that originated in a Wild West-style gunfight, but fittingly, it actually comes from a horse. Our founder, Dr. Max Smith, bred horses with a stallion named Gunstock Rebel, and his bloodline came to be known as "Gunstock horses". After a while, Max figured he better go ahead and name his ranch Gunstock, and the name stuck. Max and his wife Rita came to Hawaii in the 60s. Max had grown up in a little town called Central, Arizona, and he came from generations of ranchers. He remembers riding a horse to school after milking the cows in the morning. Max got a job as a meat inspector in Hawaii and then worked his way up to be Hawaii's state veterinarian, a job he held for 19 years. Meanwhile, a plot of land that had been used to grow sugar cane became available when the Kahuku sugar mill closed down in 1971. It was situated in a beautiful area that overlooked the ocean on Oahu's North Shore. Max and his family leased the land and began work transforming it into Gunstock Ranch. When you go on trail rides, you can still spot remnants of the old sugar cane operation hidden among the forests and pastures that are now home to horses, cattle, and wildlife. Max became something of a ranching legend here on the island and worked hard to better the land and his community. He was inducted into the Hawaii Paniolo Hall of Fame, won rodeo and show arena competitions, and supported high school rodeo riders and 4-H. He's remembered fondly by those who were lucky enough to know him. Here at Gunstock, we're grateful for the legacy he passed on to us that allows us to do what we love everyday. The Smith family is still ranching here, and they've also welcomed the community and visitors to come enjoy this beautiful and special place. Though sunny Hawaii isn’t the first place you’d think of when it comes to haunted Halloween locales, there’s actually a secret feature of the ranch that’s especially fitting this time of year. Those of you who’ve visited us might know exactly what we’re talking about: the hidden caves. These aren’t your average caves. While most caves are made of rock, the ones at Gunstock Ranch are made of coral. Talk about a Hawaiian twist! Our best guess is that these caves used to be underwater back when the islands were forming, and now they’re on the surface for everyone to enjoy. On some of our off-road eco tours , guests are able to climb down into the caves and look around. It’s a nice way to cool off and get out of the sun. In fact, that’s exactly what they were used for not too long ago. If you read our last blog post , you know that Gunstock Ranch used to be a sugar cane plantation. The workers would use the caves to take a break and stay cool during the heat of the day. But the caves also had a secret use. Laie, the little town right next door to us, was (and still is!) a dry town, so you couldn’t buy alcohol. But the workers didn’t let that stop them. They used the caves to hide their stashes of booze, giving them more than one reason to take as many breaks in the caves as they could. We have yet to find any hidden bootleg liquor in the caves, but they’re still an amazing natural feature and a highlight of our off-road tours. The caves are fun and exciting any time of year, and especially around Halloween when a dark, spooky cave really gets us in the spirit of the season. Enjoy this list of 10 things you may not have known about Gunstock Ranch: 1) The name of our ranch comes from the favorite horse of our founder, Max. This horse’s name was “Gunstock Rebel.” When it came time to name the ranch, Max decided to call it “Gunstock Ranch” in honor of his favorite horse. 2) Some of our current horses are from the original Gunstock bloodline! Our horses Rondo, Nelly, Libby, Remington, Tex, Buckles, Nitro and Buttons come from this incredible family tree. 3) Cowboy boots only last 6 months. 8 months with duct tape. 4) Our horses receive chiropractic adjustments! 5) We have amazing WWII historical sites on the ranch, including gun turrets and a bunker. 6) We have caves on the property. Some as large as 200ft long with a 40 foot drop. Our most famous cave has been used for Hawaii 5-O, NCIS Hawaii, and the Book of Mormon videos. 7) Majority of management are female. For the Chicken and Broccoli, you'll need the following ingredients: - Chicken breasts (1 per person) - Broccoli (steamed) - 1 can of cream of chicken soup - 1 can of cream of mushroom soup - 1 cup of mayonnaise - 1 cup of milk - 2 squirts of lemon juice - 1 tablespoon of curry powder (or more if you want) - 2 cup of shredded cheese - Foil for covering the baking pan Instructions: 1. **Prepare the Chicken and Broccoli:** Start by cooking the chicken breasts. You'll need one chicken breast per person. After cooking, shred the chicken into bite-sized pieces. In a separate pan, cook the broccoli until it's tender. Drain and set aside. 1. **Create the Creamy Sauce:** In a mixing bowl, combine the cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, mayonnaise, milk, lemon juice, and curry powder. Mix them together until you have a creamy sauce. Add the shredded cheese to the sauce and stir until it's well incorporated. 1. **Assemble the Casserole:** In a baking pan (we recommend a half-foil pan-sized), combine the shredded chicken and the cooked broccoli. 1. **Combine Ingredients:** Pour the creamy sauce mixture over the chicken and broccoli in the baking pan. Make sure to mix everything together thoroughly so that every bite is packed with flavor. 1. **Add the Finishing Touch:** Sprinkle some extra shredded cheese on top of the casserole for that irresistible cheesy goodness. Lightly sprinkle some additional curry powder on top to enhance the flavor profile. 1. **Bake to Perfection:**    - Cover the baking pan with foil to lock in all those fantastic flavors.    - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the casserole for 45 minutes. For the Banana Cream Pie (1 Pan), you'll need the following ingredients: - 2 soft butter sticks (Imperial butter works best) - ¼ cups sugar - 2 cups all-purpose flour - 5 bananas - 3 ½ cups milk - 2 vanilla instant pudding mixes - 1 (8oz) coolwhip Instructions: 1. First cream the butter sugar, then add the flour, ensuring to mix it well. 2. Add mixture to the baking dish and press pastry down on the bottom and sides of the dish. (remember not to handle the pastry too much, the less the handling the better) With a fork poke some holes through the pastry. 3. Bake for 20 minutes or until the edges of your crust are golden brown. Stand for 15 minutes or until cool. 4. Slice bananas  and place on the bottom of the dish evenly. 5. In a large bowl, mix milk and two packets of the JELLO brand, Vanilla Instant pudding and whisk for 1 minute continuously. 6. Quickly pour the pudding over the bananas before the pudding sets. Spread the coolwhip over the set pudding 7. (Optional) Sprinkle with crushed unsalted peanuts.  8. Place it in the refrigerator for a better result. Our most current policies will reflect current state and city guidelines. Please contact us directly for further details. Currently masks are not required for outdoor experiences. (11/1/21) ## Tour Operational Changes • Group Rides (1.5 Hour Scenic horseback ride, 1 Hour Scenic horseback; Sunset Horseback) will not exceed current state guidelines. • Guests will maintain socially distancing guidelines while on horseback. • Guests in Off-Road vehicles will wear masks (will follow current state guidelines) • All other tours are already private. ## Staff • The staff has also been instructed to stay home if they are not feeling well and or experiencing COVID-like symptoms. • Our staff will wear masks during check-in, loading guests, and when guests need help from staff and unloading. During the horseback ride, masks may be removed so guests can hear the tour. CDC social distancing guidelines will be followed. • Our staff  will only take  guest photos  from their phones ## Pre-Arrival • If the answer is yes to any of these questions we kindly ask you to reschedule or cancel your reservation for the safety of other guests and our staff. • • Are you experiencing a cough, shortness of breath, or sore throat? • • Have you experienced a fever in the last 48 hours? #### We ask that for: • Horseback rides guests wear a mask during check-in, mounting, and unmounting. • Off-road tours guests will wear masks through the duration of the tour. No walk-ins permitted • Guests will be assigned a picnic table  (private to their party) to wait for their tour. Guests will be able to sign waivers on-site. • Masks are required to protect yourself and our staff. Experience with horses is a plus.
