What: XTERRA Gunstock Ranch Trail Run
When: October 19, 2019
Where: Gunstock Ranch (map it)
You’ll love this challenging and scenic run on the trails of a real working ranch. Enjoy spectacular views of Oahu including the Windward & North shores as you navigate rolling hills and forest trails. The half marathon is timed perfectly as a great training run for the Honolulu Marathon in December, or there is also a fun 5k option if you’re a sprinter, a beginner, or even someone who wants to just get some exercise in the fresh air and see some beautiful views of Hawaii that most don’t get to see.
Distance: Half Marathon
A little bit of everything on this course–gravel, single track, dirt roads, and about 2/3 of a mile of asphalt. Three big hills, and lots of smaller ones.
Mostly dirt trails and gravel, this 5k is 2 miles of up, and then 1.1 mile screaming downhill to the finish.
Both races wend their way through a working ranch, so runners will want to watch out for the biodegradable land mines the horses and cattle leave around.
- How hard is the race?
It’s definitely not a road race. There is a lot of elevation change, and the terrain varies widely. Sometimes it’s really muddy, and sometimes it’s really dusty. If you’re looking to break your PR, this probably isn’t the race to do it. BUT, it’s a great way to see a part of Hawaii most people don’t get to see. And it’s good to do hard things.
- Can I pick up a packet for a friend?
Yes. Just let the course directors know beforehand, or show an email/text/note from your friend saying it’s OK.
- Is there race-day packet pickup?
We’ll have limited race-day packet pickup from 5-6 am on Race Day.
- Is the course stroller friendly?
- Is there a time limit?
At 4 hours, we will sweep the course for timing chips. You can still head to the finish line, but your time isn’t guaranteed to be included in the results.
- Can I preview the course?
Because most of the course is on a working ranch, you will not be able to run it prior to the race.
